Top quality structural bamboo poles

At Masters of Bamboo, quality comes first. Through direct import of bamboo poles and carrying out our own quality inspections on site in Colombia (Guadua), Indonesia (Java) and China (Moso and Nigra), we can exclusively supply strong and high-quality structural bamboo species.

Thanks to our years of experience, we know exactly which bamboo poles are suitable for building with bamboo.
Bamboo is one of the most sustainable building materials in the world. It is a type of grass that grows extremely fast and absorbs significantly more CO₂ than many other types of wood.

We are happy to tell you everything about this natural building material and the different bamboo poles available from us.

What is the difference between the bamboo poles?

We offer four different types of bamboo poles: Guadua, Java, Moso and Nigra, these types have their own characteristics:

Guadua (Angustifolia)

We import these bamboo poles from Colombia, and they are among the strongest bamboo species in the world. They are extremely suitable for structural construction.

The bamboo plant grows to a height of 20 to 30 meters in 6 months, with some reaching up to 35 meters. The average diameter of the bamboo poles is between 8 and 13 cm, and sometimes they grow to a thickness of 22 cm. We can harvest the Guadua poles when they are mature; this is between 3 and 5 years.

The Guadua bamboo pole has a beautiful natural yellowish color and may have dark spots. The dark spots on the bamboo pole are part of the natural character when you choose a natural product.

Due to the porous outer layer, these bamboo poles can be easily treated with oil or varnish, or you can paint them. The Guadua bamboo pole has minimal taper in diameter, which is approximately 10 to 15% over a length of 3 meters. So a 3-meter bamboo pole is ± 10 cm at the thickest end and ± 8.5 cm at the thinnest end.

  • Country of origin: Colombia
  • Diameters: 5 to 15 cm
  • Lengths: Up to 6 meters
  • Color: Natural
  • Surface: Matte
  • Taper: 10 - 15% over 3 meters length
  • Finish: Unlacquered
  • Fire behavior: D-s1 (EN 1350-1)
  • Density: 669 kg/m3
  • Strength class: 17204 N/mm2 - 77.92 N/mm2

Java Black (Gigantochloa atroviolacea)

We import this beautiful dark bamboo pole from Indonesia, from the island of Java. The beautiful dark color is a natural color that the pole acquires as it matures; this is between 3 and 5 years.

The bamboo plant is green in color when it emerges from the ground and grows an average of 9 cm per day during 3 to 6 months. As the plant ages, it changes color to dark brown / black. Once fully grown, this bamboo species reaches an average height of 8 to 12 meters and a diameter of 5 to 10 cm.

The dark brown bamboo pole has a porous outer layer, which allows oil or lacquer to adhere well. Due to its beautiful colors, this bamboo pole is decoratively a feast for the eyes, but also perfect for building with. The black bamboo poles are fairly straight up to a length of 4 meters and have a diameter taper of 15% over 3 meters.

  • Country of origin: Indonesia
  • Diameters: 5 to 10 cm
  • Lengths: Up to 4 meters
  • Color: Dark brown / Black
  • Surface: Matte
  • Taper: 10 - 15% over 3 meters length
  • Finish: Unlacquered

Moso (Phyllostachys edulis)

We import the Moso bamboo poles from China, where millions of hectares grow. This bamboo species is one of the fastest growing plants on earth and can grow up to more than 1 meter per day.

In just a few months, this bamboo grows to a height of 20 meters or more and matures between 3 and 5 years. Moso bamboo poles can have a diameter of 14 to 16 cm.

The bamboo poles have a somewhat glossy appearance, which means lacquer or oil adheres less well. The taper in diameter is greater with the Moso bamboo pole than with other species and is approximately 20 to 30% over a length of 3 meters.

This bamboo pole is extremely hard, due to the outer layer, and cracks faster than a Guadua bamboo pole. A Moso bamboo pole has a beautiful appearance and is particularly suitable for decorative use.

  • Country of origin: China
  • Diameters: 3 to 12 cm
  • Lengths: Up to 5 meters
  • Colour: Natural
  • Surface: Glossy
  • Taper: 20 - 30% over 3 meters length
  • Finish: Unlacquered

Nigra (China)

These beautiful bamboo poles are imported from China and have a natural dark colour. This specific species grows to a height of 6 metres and has a diameter of 3 to 5 cm.

The bamboo plant is initially green in colour and becomes dark as it matures. This occurs between 3 and 5 years.

The bamboo poles have a beautiful, glossy appearance and a somewhat greasy outer layer, which means oil or lacquer adheres less well. The bamboo poles are beautiful to look at and excellently suited for decorative use.

  • Country of origin: China
  • Diameters: 3 to 5 cm
  • Lengths: Up to 3 metres
  • Colour: Dark brown
  • Surface: Glossy
  • Taper: 20 - 30% over 3 metre length
  • Finish: Unlacquered

Applications of bamboo poles

Bamboo poles are used in interior construction, garden projects, and as construction material. Some examples include: rain pipes, scaffolding, cable ducts, water gutters, stair railings, and room dividers. Bamboo poles are easy to work with using a fine saw. When mounting with screws, pre-drilling is necessary to prevent the pole from splitting. The bamboo poles can be connected to each other with bolts, threaded rods, or with rope. A good example of this are our pergolas, or garden arches which we offer as complete construction kits, consisting of bamboo poles and all the necessary fastening materials.

Veelgestelde vragen

Bamboo poles can crack due to differences in climate. This can happen at any time. These are always cracks in the lengthwise direction of the pole and never in the width. The cracks can become larger, but can also close again. These cracks do not affect the strength of the bamboo pole. This is a natural property of bamboo and cannot be prevented.

You can easily cut a bamboo pole with a fine saw such as a mitre saw, hacksaw or Japanese saw. This ensures a clean, splinter-free cut.
Tip: Before sawing, apply some painter's tape to the area where you will be cutting, this prevents splintering.

Yes, just like wood, bamboo poles will turn grey over time due to exposure to UV radiation. To slow down this process, you can treat the bamboo poles with a varnish or stain, such as: Bamboo Protector. Has your bamboo already turned grey? Then we recommend our Bamboo Renovator (Natural or Black), this coloured stain ensures that the natural colour of the bamboo is restored.

Our bamboo sticks are thinner and are usually sold in bundles of 50 to 500 (depending on the size) pieces. These bamboo sticks are often used decoratively or, for example, as plant support during the growth of flowers, trees and plants. Bamboo poles, on the other hand, are sold individually and can be used for decorative and construction purposes depending on the length and diameter.
