Protecting and maintaining bamboo products

Bamboo is a natural material from which many products are made, from raw bamboo poles to panel material, fences and planks. You can hardly imagine it anymore: nowadays everything can be made from bamboo. Every product is different and produced in a different way. Moreover, not all products are made from the same type of bamboo. There is also quite a lot of variation in this, and this determines which lacquer or oil adheres to the bamboo.

That is why we offer a wide assortment and always the right oil, stain or lacquer to give your bamboo material the right protection. In addition to products to protect your bamboo, we also sell a bamboo cleaning agent: Bamboo Cleaner, to clean your bamboo and a ground protector to protect bamboo in the ground. Varnishing or oiling bamboo

Many bamboo maintenance products are available, and to determine whether you should apply lacquer or oil to your bamboo, it is important to know a few things. Always check the product advice to know which maintenance products are recommended.

Bamboo oil is often quick to apply with a cloth or sponge and gives the material a bit more color. After application, the material looks wet and the natural color is enhanced. Oil absorbs into the product faster, which is why you will need to apply it more often than a stain or lacquer.

Be careful when using oil to rinse out the cloth thoroughly and hang it outside or in a well-ventilated area. A cloth that is bunched up with oil can spontaneously combust!

Bamboo lacquer or stain is often applied annually. Once your bamboo fence, pergola, or bamboo fencing rolls have been installed, you can provide them with a protective UV-resistant lacquer layer, such as Bamboo Protector. This slows down the greying caused by UV light.

Once your product has greyed, you can apply the Bamboo Renovator Natural or Bamboo Renovator Black, to which we have added a pigment color to the lacquer. This stain gives your greyed bamboo more color as you apply multiple layers. And it also has a UV protector.

Products made from natural Moso bamboo poles

For bamboo fencing screens, poles, pergolas and bamboo fencing rolls, products made from natural material, it is important to know which type of bamboo they are made from.

The fact is that a bamboo lacquer does not always adhere well to products made from the Moso variety (Phyllostachys edulis). The bamboo poles have a particularly hard, smooth outer layer to which lacquer or stain adheres less well. That is why we recommend protecting these products with an oil.

Once the Moso bamboo poles have greyed somewhat, this outer layer has become more porous and you can switch to a bamboo stain or lacquer.

Products made of Tali, Java, Guadua or Tonkin bamboo

A large part of our range of bamboo fencing screens, bamboo fencing rolls and poles is made from the bamboo species Tali, Java, Guadua and Tonkin bamboo. These bamboo poles have a softer and porous outer layer, giving you the choice of a bamboo lacquer or oil. Both products adhere well to these bamboo species. The choice is yours to make, depending on your preference for protecting and maintaining your bamboo products.

Protecting bamboo plywood

Bamboo plywood is glued water-resistant, but is not protected against stains. The panels are delivered natural, without lacquer or oil. To protect the bamboo plywood, we offer a high-quality lacquer: Bamboo Topcoat, which provides the bamboo plywood with a durable protective layer.

Maintaining bamboo decking boards or facade boards

This material is extremely hard. Bamboo facade boards or decking boards have a density of 1150 kg per m³. As a result, the material absorbs poorly and lacquer adheres less well. That is why we offer an oil for this, available in 2 colours: Bamboe Shield Nano and Bamboo schild Thermo.

Bamboo Stain in two colours

At Masters of Bamboo, we have bamboo stain in two colours. These have been specially developed to give your discoloured bamboo fence or bamboo fencing rolls a fresh colour again. This way, you can stain your bamboo boundary fence and restore the natural colour or the natural / dark (black) colour.

The bamboo stain has a pigment addition of yellow or brown. The more layers you apply, the darker your bamboo fence will become. The bamboo stain is fairly transparent and keeps the original structure of the bamboo visible.

Both bamboo stains are water-based. Our advice is to apply this annually when your bamboo has turned grey.
