Bamboo Pergolas

Masters of Bamboo has the largest selection of bamboo pergolas in Europe, with more than 35 different types and sizes from 1 × 2 to 6 × 6 meters. We have designed our pergolas ourselves; and they are made from bamboo poles imported directly from Colombia or Indonesia. The bamboo pergola is delivered to your home as a complete kit. Building a bamboo pergola

Each bamboo pergola is delivered as a complete DIY construction kit. To make assembly as easy as possible, each kit includes a manual, all necessary fastening materials, and a bamboo drill bit. The pergolas are fully demountable and easy to customise by shortening the posts with a fine saw. For optimal stability, we recommend anchoring the posts with our post holders.
We offer two types: a post holder for mounting on a hard surface, such as tiles or decking, and a post holder that you drive into the ground and place the posts over. When placing in the ground, treatment with Bamboo Ground Protector is essential for a maximum lifespan.

What is a bamboo pergola?

A bamboo pergola is an open construction made from natural bamboo poles. It usually consists of 4 posts that are connected to each other by horizontal beams. On top of the beams, bamboo poles are mounted again, creating an open construction that creates a beautiful atmosphere in your garden or on your terrace. Once the base is in place, you can already sit underneath it and enjoy the ambiance. It's even more fun to decorate the pergola or give it an upgrade.

You can use the pergola well for climbing plants that love to grow over it, or you can turn it into a canopy. You can then decide for yourself whether you want to make it waterproof or just use it as a shaded spot.

If you decide to put a roof on it, make sure you buy the right pergola that is suitable for this. Another fun idea is to equip the pergola with thatched roofs or a split bamboo fencing roll or to decorate it beautifully with lights, garlands or other fun decorative materials. A pergola has many possibilities and can be decorated entirely to your liking.

Why a bamboo pergola?

A bamboo pergola makes your garden a lot more beautiful and warmer in appearance. The beautiful, natural colors brighten up your garden, terrace or shaded corner completely. A bamboo pergola is made from bamboo stems that are 3 to 5 years old.

During this rapid growth, bamboo absorbs 3 to 4 times more CO₂ than a tree. After cutting, bamboo grows back; so you don't need to replant it. The bamboo pergola is an environmentally conscious choice and a beautiful base to build a canopy or to let it be overgrown with plants.

Our pergolas are divided into four basic models, made from two different bamboo species: Guadua (the strongest bamboo species in the world) and Java Black.

Tip! For placing and anchoring the pergolas in the ground or on a terrace, we have developed special ground post holders or post holders with foot; order these at the same time.

Bamboo Pergola Bogota

The Bogota pergola comes from Colombia and is available in 15 different sizes. If you are looking for a pergola of 2 × 2 meters, for example, you can buy it directly here. Made of Guadua bamboo poles, with posts that are 11 to 13 cm thick, the pergola has a robust appearance.

Bamboo Pergola Calima

We designed the bamboo pergola Calima in 2024, when we visited our partner in Colombia, and it is made of Guadua. We use double posts of 9 to 11 cm thick, on which the beams rest. This ensures an extra strong and stable pergola that can be used well to create a covering, for example with a waterproof roof. As standard, we offer this pergola in 11 different sizes.

We have transferred the design of the Calima to the Bali pergola. Here we have also doubled the posts from 7 to 10 cm, but made from dark brown bamboo poles. Why buy a bamboo pergola from Masters of Bamboo

For more than 20 years, we have been importing and developing bamboo products. This includes bamboo pergolas, for which we developed the first models in 2012. Back then, we made the bamboo pergola from Moso bamboo poles. Later, we chose to replace the natural color with Guadua bamboo, as this bamboo species is better suited for constructing a pergola.

The Guadua bamboo pole is the strongest bamboo pole you can find and is imported by us from Colombia. In Colombia, we work together with our regular partner and former associate, who plants, harvests, and treats his own bamboo there.

The other high-quality bamboo species we have selected is the Java dark brown bamboo pole. We import this specific species from the island of Java, Indonesia. The beautiful, natural dark color has a completely different appearance and is somewhat more affordable. Here too, Masters of Bamboo has a regular partner, and part of the materials are sourced from our own plantations. This means we can guarantee the best quality and have this under our own management.

Tips and facts about a bamboo pergola

If you choose a beautiful bamboo pergola, it's good to know a few characteristics of the material. Bamboo is a beautiful and sustainable alternative to wood and in many cases has the same properties. Bamboo, just like wood, will discolor over time. During the autumn and winter months, your pergola may also develop deposits; this is caused by moisture. Fortunately, we have various maintenance products to restore color to the pergola or to clean it.
Bamboo, like wood, can also crack, but bamboo poles are hollow on the inside, making this slightly more noticeable. Don't worry about this; it cannot be prevented and is part of the material. During the summer months, the cracks may expand slightly and shrink again during the winter months.
Building with bamboo is fun and fairly light work. Bamboo is hollow and therefore much lighter than a wooden beam. Because the poles are hollow, it's important not to tighten the bolts and nuts too firmly. Tight is tight!

Yes, if your posts are long enough, like with the pergolas from Masters of Bamboo, that is possible. Make sure to always treat the parts that go into the ground with Bamboo Ground Protector.

You can easily install the bamboo pergola by following the Masters of Bamboo manual. You will receive this when you purchase your pergola.

Yes, this is certainly possible. If you plan to do this, make sure to choose the sturdy models. The construction must be strong enough, such as with the Calima and Bali models. On the pergola, you can create different types of roofs, entirely according to your wishes.

Yes, you can do this by ordering a size that is slightly larger than the desired size. Saw the bamboo poles to the desired length and then follow the instructions.
