Bamboe Bouw Nederland

Since 2005

Bamboe Bouw Nederland

In 2005, Pim van der Eng and Sandra Bonne started selling bamboo poles from their garage as a hobby.

It all began during a holiday to the Dominican Republic, where they saw bamboo poles for the first time and were immediately struck by their beautiful aesthetic. Upon returning to the Netherlands, Pim decided to build a bamboo canopy in his backyard and went in search of suitable materials.

They ended up with a few leftover poles, which they sold on Marktplaats (a Dutch online marketplace). The materials truly resonated with them; they fell in love with bamboo's versatility and eco-friendliness. This inspired them to source more products and officially establish their company under the name Bamboe Bouw Nederland. Pim and Sandra spent their evenings building the website and processing orders.

Until 2010, they also ran a successful civil engineering firm, but it was becoming less and less fulfilling. Their choice was clear: they wanted to focus entirely on the sales, development, and import of bamboo products. Demand surged, and their customer base grew steadily.

In 2012, they were given the chance to participate in the Floriade in Venlo—a massive challenge and investment, but a unique opportunity to put Bamboe Bouw Nederland on the map. Together with orchid grower KNOP and Bamboo Giant, they were commissioned to build "Tropical Eden." It was a fantastic project that they successfully brought to life with the help of family and friends.

Before long, they outgrew their warehouse in Uitgeest. They moved operations to Beverwijk, taking up residence at Biesland 28. The development and sale of bamboo products continued at a rapid pace, and the assortment eventually grew to include nearly 400 products.

Since 2015

Bamboo Import Europe

We wanted to expand our range of bamboo products to include Guadua bamboo poles. This led Stéphane Schröder of Guadua Bamboo to the Netherlands, where there was an instant connection: we shared the same passion and drive. Together, Pim, Sandra, and Stéphane decided to establish Bamboo Import Europe B.V.

By joining forces, they built Bamboo Import Europe B.V. into a leading company.

They traveled the world in search of reliable partners who shared their dedication: a love for the product, care for employees, and a drive to innovate. This approach ensured that their bamboo products were among the best in their class. They were welcomed as friends by their international suppliers and partners. It was always understood that everyone was a part of the success; the suppliers were an essential link in the quality and development of the products.

Bamboo Import Europe B.V. grew into the European market leader for bamboo garden materials, boasting 7,000 m² of warehouse space in Beverwijk and representation in 17 countries. A close-knit team that felt like family: that was perhaps the best description. Every customer was welcomed with open arms.

In November 2021, they sold Bamboo Import Europe B.V., and we said goodbye to the beautiful company we had built with so much love and dedication. They were fully confident that the future of the company was in good hands.

Unfortunately, that trust proved to be misplaced. The company was mismanaged, which ultimately led to the bankruptcy of Bamboo Import Europe B.V. in January 2024. Although the company has since made a restart at a different location, it is no longer the same.

Stephane Schroder met zijn team van Guadua Bamboo in Colombia

Since 2007

Guadua Bamboo

Guadua Bamboo was founded in 2007 by Stéphane Schröder in Costa Rica. After emigrating from Belgium to Costa Rica in 2004, he initially opened a furniture business focused on importing antique furniture from Europe.

A few years later, Stéphane became captivated by bamboo when one of his employees brought a Guadua flower vase to work. The man accidentally dropped the vase on the concrete floor, and to everyone's amazement, it remained completely intact. Fascinated by this exceptionally strong material, Stéphane began to immerse himself in this then relatively unknown South American bamboo species. This marked the beginning of his bamboo adventure.

Today, Stéphane Schröder is recognized worldwide as the leading specialist in the field of Guadua. With years of hands-on experience, he now leads Guadua Bamboo SAS, which has been based in Colombia since 2013. The company specializes in the cultivation of various bamboo species, the establishment of commercial bamboo plantations, and the production of the world’s strongest bamboo building materials for the international market.

Guadua Bamboo SAS works closely with local communities to combat deforestation. Through training programs, local farmers are retrained as bamboo growers, furniture makers, and builders. The ecological and socio-economic impact of the company is now regarded as a model project within Colombia and contributes to a more sustainable national policy.
