The Guadua bamboo pole is a type of bamboo native to Latin America. Guadua bamboo is known as the strongest bamboo species in the world, with a high load-bearing capacity and a tensile strength comparable to that of steel. In addition, these poles have a thick wall thickness, which contributes to their exceptional strength and stability. This makes the bamboo poles extremely suitable for bamboo construction.

Guadua bamboo poles are ideal for a wide range of applications, such as robust building constructions, stylish furniture, decorative elements and garden fencing.

The strong poles are extremely suitable for construction projects. You often see it in construction projects in South America. In Europe there is also bamboo construction with Guadua bamboo poles. See also our Bamboo projects for constructions for festivals and zoos, among other things. Bamboo is also used in constructions such as the construction of a parking garage in The Hague and Amsterdam, a complete beach theater in Noordwijk, or art structures.

In short, choose Guadua bamboo for the strongest and most durable constructions.

  • Diameter: The diameter of each bamboo pole varies. Our stated dimensions are always measured at the base (or the thickest side of the bamboo pole). Are you looking for a specific size? Come by and choose the perfect bamboo poles for your project.
  • Thick wall: Guadua bamboo has a naturally thick wall, which contributes to the strength of the bamboo.
  • Woven fibers: The structure of Guadua bamboo is woven rather than parallel as with most bamboo species. This structure contributes to the load-bearing capacity of the bamboo pole.
  • Gradient: A natural property of bamboo poles is that they are thicker at the base than at the top. The slope of the bamboo poles depends on the bamboo species and the length of the pole. With Guadua bamboo the slope is minimal, about 10-15% over a length of 3 meters.
  • Straightness: Bamboo is a natural product, therefore bamboo poles are never 100% straight.
  • Variations: Each bamboo pole is unique, with its own character and charm. Variations in colour and width are normal and add an authentic touch to any project.
  • Stains: Guadua bamboo poles sometimes show black spots. These are completely normal for Guadua stems growing at high altitudes, and are also a sign of extreme hardness due to their high silica content.
  • Cracks: Vertical cracks can/will occur in bamboo poles, this is especially during the hot and dry summer months. Just like wood, bamboo will expand or shrink when changes in temperature or humidity occur. However, cracks do not directly affect the structural properties or lifespan of the bamboo.

Tips for working with Guadua bamboo poles

  • How to cut bamboo poles?
You can cut bamboo poles with a Japanese saw, hand saw or cross-cut saw. Use a fine-toothed saw where possible to prevent splintering.
  • How to drill bamboo poles?
Drilling or making holes in bamboo poles is easy with a hole drill or a sharp wood drill.
  • How to connect bamboo poles?
Bamboo poles can be connected in many different ways. Most techniques use rope and/or threaded ends, but methods such as the fish mouth connection or mortise and tenon connection are also possible.
  • How to screw bamboo poles?
If you want to use screws to mount bamboo poles to something, it is best to always pre-drill to avoid cracks.
  • How to halve or split bamboo poles?
The hollow inside makes it easy to halve a bamboo pole. You can do this, for example, by hammering a chisel or sharp wedge downwards from one side. Repeat this on the other side and you will see that the bamboo pole splits neatly into 2 parts. Of course you can also halve the bamboo pole with a saw so that you get 2 half bamboo parts.
  • How to paint bamboo poles?
You can paint, spray, or oil bamboo poles. Our advice is always to thoroughly degrease and sand lightly. Guadua bamboo posts are extremely suitable for this due to the porous structure of the post. This means that paint, oil or varnish adheres perfectly to this type of bamboo.
  • Can bamboo poles go into the ground?
If you wish to place bamboo poles in the ground, we recommend that you apply Bamboo Ground Protector to the part that is placed in the ground. This special black coating protects bamboo against wood rot and significantly extends its lifespan.

When used outdoors, bamboo will turn grey, just like wood. To maintain the natural colour of bamboo, we recommend treating the poles annually with Bamboo Protector, a specially developed UV-resistant varnish that slows down the greying process, so that your bamboo poles stay beautiful for longer.

Treat before placing in the ground

If you want to place bamboo poles in the ground, we recommend the Bamboo Ground Protector to be applied to the part that is placed in the ground. This special black coating protects bamboo from wood rot and considerably extends its lifespan.

How Strong is Bamboo?

Bamboo is remarkably strong and durable; it is often compared to steel because of its high tensile strength. This means that bamboo can withstand great forces without breaking. This property makes it ideal for applications in construction, furniture, and other products that require robustness.
