Buying bamboo slabs? Everything you need to know about bamboo panel material
Are you looking for bamboo slabs for your project? Or would you like to learn more about bamboo panels and their possibilities? This blog post will tell you all about the quality, types, applications, and benefits of bamboo panels.
Our experience with bamboo slabs
In 2010, we traveled to China to find a reputable bamboo panel manufacturer. At the time, we thought it didn't matter who made the panels. Bamboo seemed like a simple material. Therefore, we initially chose the cheapest supplier.
But we soon discovered that making a high-quality bamboo slab requires a lot of skill. It all starts with the right bamboo poles, which must have the correct age and moisture content.
How is a bamboo slab made?
Bamboo slats are removed from the bamboo poles. The outer layer—a thin, hard layer that protects the pole—is removed. The slats are then processed until they are all the same size. Only then can they be properly glued and pressed into a strong bamboo panel .
Types of bamboo panels
There are two main types of bamboo sheet materials:
- Vertically pressed bamboo panel ( side pressed ):
In this case, the bamboo slats are pressed on their sides. The result is a calm, natural look. This is the most popular bamboo panel . - Horizontally pressed bamboo panel ( plain pressed ):
Here, the slats are pressed flat. More of the bamboo structure is visible, creating a more vibrant and busy pattern. Some people find this less attractive, while others find it very characterful.
Bamboo veneer and panel thicknesses
Bamboo panels are available in various thicknesses, from thin bamboo veneer to thick panels of 10 , 15 , 20 , 30 and even 40 mm .
The standard size of a bamboo slab is 122 x 244 cm. Long bamboo slabs are also available – ideal for long tables or countertops.
The most popular thickness is 20 mm: strong, versatile, and suitable for many applications.
